Sue Clearwater

Sue Clearwater is the mother of Seth and Leah and the wife of Harry. She is part of the Quileute tribe and lives on the La Push reservation.

Maria

Power-hungry and ambitious, Maria is a vampire who met Jasper Whitlock when he was a human serving in the Confederate Army and transformed him into a vampire. With help from him and her two sisters, Lucy and Nettie, she set about creating a newborn army of bloodsuckers to rule over many areas of Mexico until Jasper broke the bonds and escaped her clutches. Little is known of her after this.

Royce King II

The treasured son of a rich bank manager, Royce King II lives during the Great Depression and is a spoiled and handsome young man. He meets and falls in love with Rosalie while she is still a human, but the union is superficial, Royce only interested in for her beauty. He brags to his friends of her superior looks and together they attack Rosalie, leaving her for dead. She is rescued by Carlisle who transforms her into a vampire, before taking her revenge on Royce and his nasty chums.

Bree

One of the newborn vampires created by Victoria in her bid to avenge James's death, Bree is very young, around 15-years-old when she is transformed.

Lucy

Lucy is the sister of the ambitious vampire Maria, and together with their other sibling, Nettie, supports Maria in her bid for bloodsucking dominance by helping to create an army of newborns.

Edward Cullen

Edward is a vampire, part of the Cullen family that lives in the Forks area. He was the first of his siblings to be turned into a vampire, when back in 1918 rather than let him die of Spanish Influenza, Carlisle intervened and transformed him. From this moment on he remains the same age, 17-years-old and so attends high school to keep up the appearance of being a normal teenager. In Twilight, he meets and falls in love with human Bella and their love is repeatedly tested as the saga continues. He has the power to read minds, is very fast and has a great passion for music.

Bella Swan

Bella is the teenage heroine of The Twilight Saga, her adventure beginning when she leaves behind her life with her mother and step-dad in Phoenix, Arizona and moves in with her local Police Chief father, Charlie in rainy Forks, Washington. Here she falls for the mysterious Edward Cullen, who it turns out is a vampire and strikes up a close friendship with former childhood chum, Jacob who is also a werewolf. Bella is clumsy and uncoordinated, hates dressing up in girlie clothes and is the ultimate girl next door.

Emmett Cullen

The strongest in the Cullen clan, the brawny Emmett is the adopted son of Carlisle and Esme, adoptive brother to Jasper, Alice and Edward and husband of Rosalie. After being mauled by a bear in 1935, he was close to death until Rosalie (already a vampire) found him and carried him back to Carlisle who bit him and transformed him into a vampire. He and Rosalie promptly fell in love, becoming inseparable. Known for his size, Emmett has a goofy sense of humour and loves working on and collecting cars.

Jasper Hale

Jasper Hale was a Major in the Confederate Army before being turned into a vampire by Maria in 1863. He then fought in the infamous Southern Vampire Wars before travelling up north after hearing from his fellow vampire friends, Charlotte and Peter of a better life there. Years later he met Alice and the pair fell in love and, in-keeping with Alice's prediction, found and joined Carlisle and his family. As the most recent convert to the Cullens' life as "vegetarian vampires" (they eat animals rather than feasting on humans), he struggles with his instincts and can be unpredictable. Thanks to his days spent in the Army, he is a skilled fighter, has the gift of controlling the emotions of others and is devoted to Alice.

Jacob Black

Jacob is a Native American who lives with his wheelchair bound father, Billy in La Push, Washington. He is from the Quileute tribe, which is descended from wolves and during the events of The Twilight Saga: New Moon learns that he has the power to phase into a wolf. This change sees him mature physically from a long-haired youngster into a tall, muscle machine. He has strong feelings for his former childhood friend, Bella and is suspicious of her relationship with Edward. He is sunny and optimistic with a huge passion for cars and his closest friends are Quil Ateara and Embry Call.

Rosalie Hale

During her human days in Depression era New York, Rosalie was a celebrated beauty and it was her stunning looks that earned her an engagement to the wealthy Royce King II. Their relationship was far from a happy one and after bragging of his fiancée's good looks, the drunken Royce and his friends abused and attacked Rosalie, leaving her for dead. In her tragic state, she was found by Carlisle who turned her into a vampire and once transformed, Rosalie took her revenge on Royce and his fellow attackers. She then joined Carlisle's budding family and two years later recruited Emmett who is her soul mate, the two sharing a very passionate love. Rosalie is narcissistic, selfish and, still longing for the chance to have a baby (vampires can't conceive), is deeply jealous of Bella.

Carlisle Cullen

Born in the 1640s in England, Carlisle is the patriarch of the Cullen family aka the Olympic coven. The son of an Anglican pastor, Carlisle worked with the church at wiping out supernatural evil and on finding a coven of vampires was bitten. After the change, he knew he couldn't go back to his old life and so over the centuries taught himself how to fight the urge for human blood and, wanting to help the human race, studied medicine becoming an accomplished doctor. He spent time with the Volturi in Italy before journeying to America where he gradually built his family starting with Edward. He is incredibly gentle and compassionate introducing to each of his family the principle of feeding from animals and not humans, is described as boasting movie star good looks and happily married to Esme, is very family focused.

Alice Cullen

The events of Alice's human life are largely unknown, her memories only really beginning with her transformation into a vampire in 1920. She underwent the change while incarcerated in an asylum, institutionalised because she had premonitions of the future, a gift that only sharpened and improved when she became a vampire. She later had a vision that she would meet and fall in love with Jasper and become part of the Cullen family and so it was. She and Jasper are the latest additions to the Cullen family, being adopted by Carlisle and Esme and she enjoys a close relationship with adopted brother Edward and his love, Bella. She is small and pixie-like, incredibly friendly and has a great passion for fashion.

Charlie Swan

Charlie is the divorced and single father of our heroine, Bella Swan and is also the Police Chief of Forks. He has a quiet and understated manner and is very low-key and private about his deep love for his daughter. From him, she has inherited her clumsiness and her shy, loner quality. His marriage to Bella's mother, Renée was short-lived and while she moved away from quiet Forks and re-married, he has remained there and is still a bachelor. He is close friends with Billy Black and Harry Clearwater and his hobbies include fishing and watching baseball.

Victoria

With her vivid red hair, it's pretty hard to ignore Victoria - not that anyone should as this vamp is dangerous. The romantic partner of James, Victoria is one of the trio of Nomad bloodsuckers that disturb the domestic harmony of the Cullens' world. While James excels at tracking, she is skilled at evasion and with her cat-like grace and athleticism is a seriously scary enemy for Edward and Bella.

Laurent

Don't trust this olive-skinned vampire. Like all of his kind, he's blessed with incredible good looks, but he's incapable of staying loyal. He joins forces with fellow Nomad vampires, Victoria and James and yet is always only ever looking out for number one.

James

James is the leader of the Nomad vampires (Laurent and Victoria) and is also the romantic partner of the flame-haired Victoria. Unlike the Cullens, he drinks human blood and is an incredibly talented tracker who enjoys the thrill of the chase. In Twilight, he takes an interest in Bella and she becomes his latest human prey.

Esme Cullen

The wife of Carlisle and adopted mother to the Cullen clan, Esme is the loving heart of the Olympic coven. Prior to her happy vampire life in Forks, Esme was married to an abusive man and after the death of her baby boy attempted suicide by throwing herself off a cliff. It was Carlisle who turned her near-death body into a vampire and once transformed her and Carlisle fell in love and started adopting more children (Carlisle already had Edward). She enjoys restoring old houses and is a very warm and loving mother.

Eric Yorkie

Like so many of his mates, Forks High School student Eric takes an instant shine to Bella, though he is similarly rejected in preference for Edward. In the books, he comes to date Katie Marshall, though in the movies is romantically involved with Bella's friend, Angela (instead of the books' character, Ben who is not in the films). He is geeky, incredibly helpful and very studious.

Mike Newton

Mike is one of the Forks High School students that befriends Bella when she first arrives there and develops quite the crush on her. This romantic longing continues throughout Bella's relationship with Edward, though he also has an off/ off thing with Jessica. Mike is blond, loyal and very popular.

Jessica Stanley

The first friend Bella makes on arriving at Forks High School, Jessica explains the Cullens to Bella when she first sights them at school. She harbours a secret crush on Edward, and as such is jealous of Bella, though comes to date Mike on and off. She is more interested in Bella's popularity than her as an actual person and is an incorrigible chatterbox.

Tyler Crowley

Involved in one of the most dramatic scenes in Twilight, Forks High student Tyler Crowley almost kills Bella when he loses control of the van he's driving in the school parking lot and heads straight for her. Thankfully, Edward intervenes and saves our heroine, creating a pivotal moment for the young lovers and gives Tyler his time in the spotlight. The cocky and boisterous Tyler develops a crush on Bella and asks her to the spring dance, only to be rebuffed, and later dates Angela (one of the Forks High School students from the book not to make it to the movie versions).

Billy Black

The widowed father of Jacob and his elder sisters, Rachel and Rebecca, Billy Black is a respected resident of La Push. He is the grandson of Ephraim Black, a one-time elder of the Quileute tribe and as such has assumed a senior position in the tribe, though unlike his son, he is not a shape-shifter. Confined to a wheelchair thanks to diabetes, he is close friends with Charlie Swan and has concerns over Bella's relationship with Edward due to the long-standing rift between vampires and werewolves.

Jared

Jared is one of the Quileute teenagers to discover he has shape-shifting powers and so joins Sam's wolf pack. He imprints on Kim, a school mate that he had never really appreciated until realising his shape-shifter status.

Paul

Hot-tempered and given to rages of anger, Paul is one of the La Push teenagers that join Sam's wolf pack. He imprints on Jacob's older sister, Rachel.

Quil Ateara

While his good friend and second cousin Jacob is confused by his transformation into a wolf, fellow La Push teenager Quil Ateara is thrilled when he finds he can shape-shift as it helps him better understand the changes in his friends. Quil is described as having an impish grin and being very muscular, though he is best remembered in the books for imprinting on Emily's young niece, Claire.

Sam Uley

Sam is the Alpha male of the La Push wolf pack and in his role as leader helps the younger members through the change. He was the first to become a wolf himself and his authority is further echoed in his imposing physique. He once dated Leah Clearwater, but has since imprinted on her second cousin, Emily Young whom he is now engaged to.

Heidi

With her long legs and flowing locks, Heidi is considered a veritable vampire beauty. She puts her stunning looks to good use, using these charms to lure humans into the Vulturi's lair where they are then eaten. This skill earns her the nicknames "fisher" and "bait".

Felix

The bulkiest of the Volturi guards, Felix is without a special power and so exudes authority and menace through his vast size. Because of this, Bella likens him to Emmett.

Demetri

Celebrated as the best tracker in the vampire world, Demetri is one of the most valued Volturi guards. He often leads their offensive line and is characterised by his tall, lean look and shoulder-length dark hair.

Alec

Like his vindictive twin sister, Jane, the youthful-looking Alec is one of the highest ranking Volturi guards thanks to his strong fighting skills. Not that he has to bust out the moves as Alec does his damage by causing sensory paralysis. Less obviously cruel than Jane, he is more calculated in his approach, making him an equally dangerous opponent.

Jane

Innocent to look at, but vicious in temperament, Jane is one of the more dangerous Volturi guards. Like her twin brother Alec, she has a strong offensive gift, the ability to inflict the illusion of pain and delights in using it. She has a rash temper and becomes a fierce foe to the Cullens.

Marcus

The quietest of the three Volturi leaders, Marcus has, over the centuries become an apathetic zombie. He once knew happiness with his wife, Didyme until she was killed by her own brother and Marcus's close ally, Aro, as the power-hungry Volturi leader feared that the pair would desert him and leave him minus their abilities (Didyme created happiness in others while Marcus can recognise relationships). He has since lived in a numb state of boredom that sees him utter barely a word to anyone.

Caius

One third of the Volturi leaders, Caius, like his fellow ancients has translucent skin and red eyes, but most distinctively his paleness is heightened by his shoulder-length white hair. The cruelest of the Volturi, he always favours the nastiest of punishments and has a great fear of werewolves based on a violent encounter with some centuries and centuries ago.

Aro

The major force behind the three Volturi leaders, Aro is blessed with the ability to read a person's every thought by touching them. The Volturi assumed control over the vampiric world from the Romanian coven centuries ago and ever since have ruled with an iron fist. Aro is described as having translucent, onion-like skin and piercing red eyes, a colour unlike those of the Cullens due to his feeding on human blood. He loves recruiting other gifted vampires to his coven and is characterised by his cheery demeanour, polite manners and thirst for power.

Embry Call

One of Jacob's best friends or "wingmen", Embry Call is a Native American teenager from La Push who, like Jacob, finds himself undergoing big changes in New Moon, learning he is a shape-shifter that can assume wolf form. Little is known of his background, excepting his mother and he is shyer and more reserved than many of the other members of the wolf pack.

Angela Weber

High school student Angela is one of the kinder, more good-natured classmates of Bella's. She is fairly shy and quiet, traits which the private Bella appreciates. She is tall for her age with gentle brown eyes and has a romantic relationship with Eric Yorkie in the movies (Ben in the books).

Seth Clearwater

Tall and gangly with a large grin, Seth Clearwater is the sweet and affectionate younger brother of Leah and the only son of Harry and Sue. Like his sister, he discovers that he is a shape-shifter and as such eagerly joins Sam's wolf pack, often showing great bravery for someone so young. However, his open nature (Bella likens him to a younger Jacob) means he's without the long-held animosity towards the vampires and so happily befriends Edward upsetting the other Quileute tribe members.

Leah Clearwater

Leah is the only daughter of Harry and Sue Clearwater, the older sister to Seth (whom she is very protective of) and second cousin to Emily Young. After being dumped by her boyfriend, Sam Uley for Emily, Leah is heartbroken, her sadness expressed through bitterness and anger. She is short-tempered and her grouchiness means she's not well-liked, though she's very loyal. At the same time as Seth, she finds that she is a shape-shifter, the only female of the pack and this constant interaction with Sam proves hard for her to deal with.

Riley

The death of James at the hands of the Cullens sets nomad vampire Victoria on a vengeful crusade to kill Bella and she sets about her nasty task by creating an army of newborn vampires. Bred to be the leader of this mob of bloodsuckers is Riley, a blond and muscular young vamp who Victoria seduces in order to do her bloody bidding.

Emily Young

Emily Young is engaged to Sam Uley, the wolf pack leader imprinting upon her when he was dating her second cousin, Leah Clearwater. He since broke off his relationship with Leah and now lives happily with Emily in a quiet, rural corner of La Push. She is aware that Sam and his friends are shape-shifters and has nasty scars running down her face and arm after Sam transformed one time when standing close to her. Despite the scars, she is described as having been beautiful and is warm and friendly, with a strong maternal streak that sees her care deeply for the wolf pack. She is also the aunt of Claire.

Harry Clearwater

The father of Seth and Leah and husband to Sue, Harry Clearwater is a tribal elder of the Quileute tribe. He is close friends with Charlie Swan and Billy Black and shares with Bella's dad a love of fishing, from which he cooks up his "famous fish fry".

Renée Dwyer

After a short-lived marriage to Charlie Swan, Renée moved away from Forks, Washington and with her daughter, Bella started a new life in Riverside, California before relocating once again in Phoenix, Arizona. She has since re-married to minor league baseball player, Phil Dwyer and with him has now started a life in Jacksonville, Florida. Due to her failed marriage to Charlie, she is against marrying at a young age, is very perceptive, intuitive and loving; though she's also scatty, erratic and childlike.
